Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Saturday, said he might lead Nigerians to save the country from shipwreck.
He said this during a breakfast meeting with the members of the National Working Committee (NWC)of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who paid him a visit in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo, in a statement signed by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, maintained his stance of not looking back in the struggle to salvage the country from bad governance.
He underlined the pitiable situation of the country and the inexcusable killings and general insecurity being experienced across the country.
“I will join men and women in the country, and if necessary, lead them in retrieving and saving the country from shipwreck” he added.
He said he would continue to advise any political party that sought his advice on any issue, while canvassing for individuality and independence of political parties.
He urged that all members of parties to be wary of fake news, rumours, blackmail, and seeds of discord that might be sown among them from external quarters.
However, Obasanjo, said he would provide more service to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He appreciated the leaders of PDP for apologising to Nigerians on behalf of the party.
He urged them to pay attention to four issues that are needed to bring PDP back to the reckoning of the people, namely, discipline, commitment, leadership and moral principles.
On the grand alliance, the former president reiterated and affirmed his belief and support for it, but he maintained that he would not be a member of any political party.
The PDP national chairman, Uche Secondus, said the 21-man delegation was in Abeokuta to make four key submissions to Obasanjo.
“Obasanjo is a national leader of this country. He is a father of the nation. So, we came to consult him. Our deliberation, although a little bit private, is connected to the 2019 polls.
“Yes, it is true Baba is no longer a member of the PDP, but he is a father of the nation. I believe that regardless of political parties, his direction is highly needed now to rescue Nigeria.
“Baba is helping our cause in the capacity of a former President. We cannot sit where the country is sliding. The media would do us a favour to let the world know Nigeria is sliding under APC government.
We are going to reach out to all other former presidents. They all would be consulted. We are taking it bit by bit,” he said.
