Fellow Progressives, Nigerians, Citizens of Africa, Champions of Democracy Worldwide,
Today, on this hallowed June 12 2025 Freedom Day, the Transformative Governance Forum stands in solemn reverence and unyielding gratitude to pay tribute to the towering icon of our democratic struggle, the undisputed bearer of the people’s mandate – Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (GCFR).
Thirty-two years ago, on a day etched forever in our collective consciousness, Nigerians spoke with one thunderous, unequivocal voice. Across ethnic lines, religious divides, and regional boundaries, they chose Chief MKO Abiola as their President.
That election, widely acclaimed as the freest and fairest in our nation’s history, was not merely a political exercise; it was a resounding affirmation of hope, unity, and the unbreakable will of the Nigerian people to chart their own democratic destiny.
Yet, that sacred mandate was brutally annulled. The dream was deferred. But Chief Abiola, embodying the very essence of ”Hope ’93″, chose principle over power, sacrifice over surrender. His defiant declaration – ”On June 12, we voted for freedom, and freedom we shall have!” – became the clarion call for a generation.
His incarceration was not a defeat; it was the crucible in which the iron resolve of Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement was forged. His ultimate sacrifice – his life given in the struggle – transformed him from a political figure into a martyr for democracy, a symbol of the blood price paid for our liberty.
Chief Abiola’s Legacy: The Pillars of Transformative Governance
The Transformative Governance Forum recognizes that Chief Abiola’s legacy is the bedrock upon which our aspirations for true democracy must be built. His vision resonates profoundly with our core principles:
1. The Sanctity of the People’s Will:
June 12 stands as an eternal testament to the inviolable power of the ballot box. Abiola’s mandate, stolen but never forgotten, compels us to relentlessly defend electoral integrity, ensure every vote counts, and hold leaders accountable to the sovereign will of the people. This is the non-negotiable foundation of transformation.
2. Unity in Diversity: Abiola’s pan-Nigerian mandate proved our diversity is our strength, not our weakness. His campaign united the nation. True transformative governance must actively foster national cohesion, celebrate our pluralism, and build bridges where others sow division.
3. Courageous Sacrifice for the Greater Good: Abiola exemplified the highest form of leadership – sacrificing personal freedom and life itself for the ideal of democracy and the future of millions. This spirit of selfless service is the antithesis of the self-aggrandizement that plagues governance. It calls leaders to prioritize national interest above all else.
4. The Indivisibility of Freedom and Prosperity: “Hope ’93” wasn’t just about political freedom; it was a blueprint for economic emancipation, social justice, and lifting the masses from poverty. Transformative governance understands that democracy without tangible improvements in the lives of citizens is hollow. Abiola’s vision demands equitable development and shared prosperity.
5. Unwavering Hope and Resilience: Even in the darkest dungeons, Abiola’s hope for a free Nigeria never dimmed. He embodies the indomitable spirit that refuses to accept tyranny or despair. This resilience is the fuel that drives transformative movements and sustains the long struggle for good governance.
The Unfinished Work:
While we celebrate the official recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day – a hard-won victory acknowledging the significance of Abiola’s sacrifice – the Transformative Governance Forum declares that *the work of June 12 remains unfinished.
True freedom demands more than periodic elections. It demands:
* Governance Rooted in Justice & Equity: Where the rule of law prevails for all, not just the powerful.
* Institutions that Serve, Not Subdue: Where independent bodies uphold democracy without fear or favour.
* Leaders of Character & Vision: Who embody Abiola’s courage, integrity, and commitment to the people.
* An Economy that Liberates Potential: Fulfilling the economic promises of “Hope ’93” for every citizen.
* A Vigilant Citizenry: Ever ready to defend the hard-won democratic space, inspired by Abiola’s example.
*Our Pledge:
On this Freedom Day, the Transformative Governance Forum pledges to keep the flame of Abiola’s legacy burning brightly, undistracted, indistractable. We recommit ourselves to the relentless pursuit of the transformed Nigeria he envisioned and died for – a Nigeria where democracy is deep, durable, and delivers dignity and development for all.
*To the Immortal Chief MKO Abiola:
We say, Thank You. Thank you for your audacious hope. Thank you for your unwavering courage. Thank you for your supreme sacrifice. Your blood waters the tree of our democracy. Your spirit animates our continued struggle. Your mandate, though deferred, remains our guiding star.
*We Remember. We Honour. And we Vow: Your sacrifice will not be in vain. The Hope you ignited will never be extinguished. The struggle for a truly free, just, and transformed Nigeria continues, fueled by your indomitable, unconquerable spirit and name.*
Long Live the Spirit of June 12!
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
*Peace be upon you, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola – The President Nigeria Never Had, But The Martyr Democracy Needed.
Signed,
The Transformative Governance Forum
