To boost cash crops production in Idanre local government area of Ondo State, the Caretaker Management Committee has distributed cocoa seedlings to farmers within the Council area.
This was contained in a statement by the council’s Head of Agriculture Department, Mr Olasunkanmi Fayato.
It said that while distributing the seedlings, the Chairman of Idanre local government, Hon. Akinsuyi Jerome said the specie distributed, known as “Hand Polinated Amazon” and is the best specie so far in the world.
He said the idea was prompted because of the fact that over 95 per cent of residents in Idanre are farmers, hence there is the need to encourage them to produce more.
Noting that Agriculture remains a very large employer of labour, he encouraged the people to pay serious attention to it. He added that the venture is lucrative enough to develop the economy of the local Government area and Ondo State.
He said: “Without any doubt, the distribution of cocoa seedlings will in some years to come boost the cash crops production which will eventually boost the economy of Idanre, Ondo State and Nigeria at large.”
At the event were all the Supervisory Councillors of the council, deputy director of Agriculture Service, Idanre local government, Mr Akadiri Adesina, and beneficiaries of the programme among others.
