The Chairman Okitipupa Local Government Area in Ondo State, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya, has warned residents of the council to desist from blocking water channels and drainages to prevent flooding wi possible loss of lives and property as the rain intensifies.
A statement by the Press Secretary to the Chairman, Mr Martins Fasusi, said that Adesanya gave the warning in Ilutitun during the inspection of flooded area caused by the heavy downpour.
The Chairman who was visibly angry with the development therefore gives the residents in the affected areas a seven day ultimatum to rid their drainages of refuse and other impediments so as to allow free flow of water during rainfall.
He assured that he had put in place necessary measures to address challenges posed by heavy rainfall as the rainy season gradually approaches.
In his words ” This is the time to make adequate preparations to avoid loss of lives and property as the rainy season approaches.
All drainages should be clean, debris and refuses should also be evacuated.
We must also desist from the act of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drains as well as erecting structures on drainage as this act is capable of precipitating flooding.
To this end, we are going to embark on holistic approach to make the environment cleaner and livable for all residents.”
He added that various programmes and initiatives had been put in place by the government to improve waste management across the LGA.
He therefore urged residents to shun all forms of indiscriminate waste disposal which can have negative effects on the environment and the people.
