News

At long last, the Federal Government and the six South-West Governors of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti have reportedly agreed on Operation Amotekun, a novel outfit to strengthen security in the affected states.

The reported agreement after days of heated controversy that generated tension across the country, was made known by the media aide to the Vice-President, Mr Laolu Akande, on Thursday via his verified Twitter handle.

But, he gave no details of the reported agreement reached beyond the one line news flash which he tweeted thus: “News Flash: FG, Southwest Governors agree on Amotekun.”

Osinbajo and the governors of the South-West states held a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja earlier on Thursday.

Although agenda were not given, it was learnt that the controversial Operation Amotekun, recently launched by the states in the zone, was the major point of discussion.

Justice minister, Mr Abubakar Malami, and the Police Inspector-General, Mr Mohammed Adamu, also attended the meeting.

Malami’s declaration of the outfit as illegal had sparked off controversies with the governors, backed generally by their people, other zones in the country, prominent groups, leaders and lawyers nationwide, insisting that they would not back down on the security outfit meant to protect their people against killings, rape and killings among other unprovoked attacks by armed bandits.

Malami had opposed it and declared it “illegal” in a statement released through his office, saying that government had a policy on community policing, which had been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari as against the regional Amotekun format.

The governors had insisted they would not dump Amotekun and sought rather to meet with the Presidency in the hope that the differences would be ironed out.
