A former Commissioner for Information in Ondo State, Prince Olu Adegboro, has passed on. He was commissioner in the Adebayo Adefarati administration.
The All Progressives Congress, APC chieftain and an Akure prince reportedly died in the early hours of Wednesday.
While mourning him, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu said the state has lost a committed progressive. Also, minister of state for Transportation, Prince Ademola Adegoroye, described Adegboro’s death as a great loss to the Akure community, Ondo State and the progressive fold. In its reaction, the APC expressed shock and sadness.
Reacting in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olabode Olatunde, the governor described Adegboro’s death as a big loss to the State and the APC.
According to the ststement: “Governor Akeredolu received the news of the death of the APC chieftain with great sadness and rude shock.
“The Governor described the late Adegboro as a man of many parts, whose political trajectory exemplified consistency and discipline.
“Prince Adegboro was a committed Progressive. His roles in the enthronement of the democracy we are nurturing today cannot be wished away.
“Baba was a politician of high repute. He pursued excellence in his life time and strove to remain dedicated to the ethos of the progressive family.
“Prince was a renowned radical Student Union Leader during his University days. His activism led to his emergence as the National President of the National Union of Nigerian Students, NUNS, between 1971 and 1972. He signposted courage and determination.
“As a commissioned officer of the Nigerian Army, who retired from the military as a captain in 1978, Baba served the country meritoriously. He dedicated his life to the service of the people and the country. He lived well.
“Late Prince Adegboro left legacies of hard work and professionalism in his different political appointments at various levels. He was Chairman, Adviser and at one time the Commissioner for Information in the State.
“His passion for writing ultimately moulded his enviable inroad into Publishing. He made immeasurable marks on all ends. His death is a big loss to the State and our great party.
“On behalf of the Government and the good people of Ondo State, Governor Akeredolu commiserates with the entire Adegboro family, the APC and, indeed, friends and acquaintances of the late Prince Olu Adegboro.”
Also, the Minister of State for Transportation, Prince Ademola Adegoroye, also an Akure prince, described Adegboro’s death as a great loss to the Akure community, Ondo State and the progressive fold.
In his condolence message to the family, Adegoroye described Adegboro as the “father of progressive politics in Akure and an immeasurable asset to the political party.”
He said: “Baba Adegboro was a father to all. He was one of the pioneers of progressive politics in Akure and Ondo State. Brilliant, intelligent and ever ready to play his part, he was a blessing to us in the political class.
“Having served the community and the State in various capacities, his leadership experience always counted whenever we needed his interventions in various knotty political issues.”
He prayed for the Adegboro family, the Akure community and indeed the APC in Ondo State the fortitude to bear the loss.
In its reaction through a statement by its Director, Media & Publicity, Mr Steve Otaloro, the APC in Ondo State said it is shocked and sad.
The party said: “It is with great sadness, and an enormous sense of shock, that we received the news of the death of Prince Olu Adegboro. We are obviously devastated at the loss. Chief Adegboro was a fine man, a talented politician, and a loving husband and father to his children.
“Prince Olu Adegboro was one of our leaders and members of the elders caucus in the state. He was a thorough progressives, so passionate about the party. He showed huge courage each time he spoke on the elders committee meeting.
“Prince Adegboro was one of the most successful leader of the Progressives in the state since the party was created, by far. Everybody will be shocked and deeply saddened to hear Prince Adegboro has died.
Engr. Ade Adetimehin, APC Chairman in Ondo State recalls that Prince Adegboro was someone who fought for social justice and brought courage, wit and humour to everything he did. He had many friends in the party, as he did across the political spectrum and away from party politics, Adetimehin stated.
“In his tribute Engr Ade Adetimehin said “ I’m deeply saddened to hear of the death of our leader Prince Adegboro and my thoughts today are with his family, friends and party colleagues who will all be devastated by his passing.
“Baba Adegboro was a hugely well-respected and well-liked man. He was without doubt one of the towering political talents of his generation – a brilliant man, who deployed knowledge, experience and wit to wonderful effect”.
“Prince Adegboro devoted his life to serving his Akure community, his people and his beloved Sunshine State. His passion for making our state a better place to live is his lasting legacy. I am proud to have known PrinceAdegboro and our state today is the poorer for his passing” Engr Ade Adetimehin concluded.”
