Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old mother and her lover, who sold their baby to a maternity home owner for N500,000.

The lover of the 20-year-old mother, a bricklayer, reportedly impregnated her out of wedlock in August 2021.

It was gathered that the woman was delivered of the baby in April 2022 at her aunt’s house at Obigbo, Rivers State, where she allegedly hid during the pregnancy.

After giving birth, she allegedly connived with her lover and sold the baby.

The Police Public Relations Officer, in the state, SP Chris Anyanwu, stated this in a statement, on Tuesday.

He said the lovers sold the baby to a maternity home owner who was arrested at Ovuma, also in the council area.

SP Anyanwu said, woman “runs a maternity home which she uses as a cover for her illicit trade.

“The suspects have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for necessary actions and prosecution.”

He added that men of the Command also arrested a two-man syndicate of child traffickers, who allegedly specialise in stealing, abducting, kidnapping, and selling of children.
