Don’t be impervious to corrections

Reflection for the day

By Olubunmi Adebayo

*Being impervious to corrections simply means the habit of not taking to corrections.*

*It is bad to fall, but it is worse when you do not take to corrections after having made a mistake.*

*I have discovered that most great falls were preceded by strong warnings that were never heeded by people.*

*Should it not surprise you that before Cain, the first son of Adam and Eve, became the first murderer in the Bible, he was warned about his wrong attitude to life.*

*The story was that God called both Cain and his brother – Abel, to come forward and offer Him sacrifice.*

*Cain offered a bad sacrifice which was rejected by God. While Abel offered a good sacrifice and it was accepted by God.*

*Cain thereafter felt bad. But God warned him that he shouldn’t feel bad because his performance was assessed based on what he presented as sacrifice. And that if he had presented something worthwhile, his sacrifice would have been accepted.*

*Please read the words of correction to Cain which he never heeded :*

*Genesis 4: [5]But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.*
*[6]And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?*
*[7]If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.*

*Do you know that the warning and corrections by God to Cain in verses 6 and 7 above were never heeded?*

*It was this impervious -to – correction mindset that made Cain to become a murderer, in fact the very first one in the entire Bible :*

*Genesis 4: [8] And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.*

*How great would it have been for Cain if after his first mistake of offering wrong sacrifice to God and the subsequent corrections, if he had listened and taken to the Words of correction from God.*

*Let us take a look at the second example for our Reflections today.*

*The story of the two sons of Prophet Eli – Hophni and Phinehas. Their story is another example of being impervious to corrections.*

*The Bible emphatically referred to the two sons of Eli as bad children who brought sorrow to a nation :*

*1 Samuel 2: [12] Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.*

*Now consider the lines of correction to them in the following words, and from no less a person but their own father :*

*1 Samuel 2: [22] Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.*
*[23]And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.*
*[24]Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the LORD’S people to transgress.*
*[25]If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.*

*Most great falls have always been preceded by strong warnings, but do people listen to such corrections and warnings?*

*Please let yours be an exception for good.*

Top of the day to you.
