President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing and improving the health status and social-economic activities of the citizenry.
He spoke yesterday during the commissioning and handing over of the Ondo Town Erosion Control Works.
The project is four kilometre in length and it is expected to put an end to perennial flooding with its attendant destruction of property in the affected areas.
Also in attendance at the project commissioning is the Ondo state Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu among other top government functionaries.
Represented by the Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, Buhari said the importance of the project to the community could not be over-emphasised as it is expected to address the devastating effects of erosion and flood menace in the community.
According to him, there is no doubt that the project would enhance and improve the health status, socio-economic activities and the general well-being of the people in the community.
Earlier, Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr Habiba Lawal, disclosed that the project was one of the third quarter, 2017 Federal Government’s ecological intervention projects awarded on November 16, 2017.
“The project was initiated through a request by the Ondo Town Community Development Unit for an urgent intervention forwarded to the fund office in order to arrest the continuous erosion and flood menace in the community.
“The commission and handover of the project to the community is expected to achieve the dual purpose of enabling them take over and exercise ownership of the project, ensure its care and sustainability.
“The resources which the Federal Government had committed to this project must not be allowed to waste,” she said.
In his remarks, the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Dr. Victor Kiladejo, commended President Buhari and Governor Akeredolu for the actualisation of the project.
He explained that before the execution of the project, the affected areas were already submerged with many property destroyed.
He charged the people of the town to make good use of the projects and desist from dumping refuse into the drainage system to avoid flooding in the town.
