Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has summoned the management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over the persistent blackout affecting Osogbo and other major towns across Osun State, describing the situation as “unbearable for residents.”

In a statement issued on Thursday, the governor expressed concern over worsening electricity supply, noting that reports from across the state indicate severe disruptions with significant negative impacts on businesses and daily life.

“I have received widespread complaints from all our major towns. Businesses are grinding to a halt. We cannot continue like this,” Adeleke said. “I am inviting the management of IBEDC for a brainstorming session to find a way out.”

He acknowledged that Nigeria’s power sector is capital-intensive and faces nationwide challenges but stressed that Osun State appears to be disproportionately affected. He emphasized the need for immediate collaboration with IBEDC to address the crisis in the short term.

Looking ahead, the governor outlined plans to diversify the state’s energy sources, highlighting renewable energy as a sustainable alternative. He, however, stressed that such solutions must be affordable for residents.

Adeleke further revealed that the state has enacted the Osun Electricity Law and is in the process of establishing the Osun Electricity Regulatory Commission.

According to him, the commission will oversee licensing of power generation companies and regulate the electricity market within the state, thereby opening up the sector and safeguarding consumer interests.

“While that is ongoing, we must interrogate IBEDC for immediate solutions. The Commissioner for Energy has been directed to organize the consultation as quickly as possible. Consumer advocacy groups will also be invited to participate,”.

On the recent rainstorm disaster, the governor assured affected residents of prompt government intervention. He disclosed that the State Emergency Management Agency has commenced the compilation of victims’ data and has been directed to ensure that no affected individual is left out.

Victims have also been encouraged to submit their details directly at the agency’s office as the government works to mobilize both local and national support.

Adeleke further disclosed that the state has reached out to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Economic Council to secure additional assistance for those affected.

He also commended Senator Lere Oyewumi for bringing the incident to national attention on the floor of the Senate.
