The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has described the exit of its former Presidential candidate and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar as nothing new.

Reacting to the development through a senior member of its National Working Committee (NWC), said in Abuja that the party was not surprised by Atiku’s resignation from the party.

The former Vice President had in a letter dated Tuesday 14th July 2025, and addressed to his Jada ward chairman in his Adamawa home state exited the party due to what he described as departure from the founding principles, among other irreconcilable differences.

The party’s official said, “Atiku’s departure from the PDP is nothing new. Hasn’t he left the party before? Did anything fundamentally change?” the party official said.

He also accused the media of focusing too much on political realignments instead of the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

Downplaying the resignation, he urged Nigerians to shift attention from political defections to more urgent issues such as hunger and economic hardship.

He thanked the PDP for opportunities it provided him—including his time as Vice President and two-time presidential candidate—but said the decision to leave was “heartbreaking,” given how far the party had veered from its original vision.

Atiku, together with some prominent politicians including former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark; former Osun State governor and ex-Interior minister, Rauf Aregbesola, ex-Tansportation minister, Rotimi Amaechi; and ex-Kaduna State governor, Nasir El Rufai among others.

The coalition under the Action Democratic Congress, is working to oust the ruling All Progressives Congress led by President Bola Tinubugside from power in the 2027 general elections.
