- Commissions projects in Akwa Ibom
Former Vice President, and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday promised to unify the country in the interest of all, as he called on well meaning citizens to rise up and support the endeavour.
He spoke in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, while commissioning the road projects executed by the Udom Emmanuel administration, as he lamented that the country is home to all vices in the world, though the problems were man-made.
The PDP Presidential candidate, who was represented by the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, called on the people of the state and all Nigerians to vote for the party in the 2023 elections to correct the ills in the country.
He also called on the party members and Nigerians to join hands together and unify the country to be free from the problem plaguing the nation, saying that Nigerians are tired of the happenings in the country.
He said, “We have good and capable leaders and stakeholders in this party that can take you to the desired height. With gratitude to Almighty God and on behalf of the presidential candidate of PDP, Atiku Abubakar, I’m here to inaugurate the road built by your Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel.
“We are grateful for the governor’s foresight in making Akwa Ibom a hub for aviation, health, and infrastructure even in agriculture. The presidential candidate, the unifier has asked me to tell you that he would ensure that the entire country is unified for the betterment of the country.
“So, we will continue to support our party and ensure we win the 2023 elections, so that we can capture back our country and put it in the right position in the comity of nation. So, Akwa Ibom and South-South are a home of PDP.
“He is calling on everybody to come together to unify this party and the entire country ourselves. We are tired of what is happening. All the vices in the world are here in Nigeria, but with the support and prayers of our elders as well as clergies, we will come out of them all.
“We have good and capable leaders and stakeholders in this party that can take you to desired nation. I congratulate the governor for the strides and this would attract investors to Akwa Ibom. I thank you and the Almighty God that I’m part of this history and the one that inaugurated this project.”
While speaking, Governor Udom commended the people and the entire community for their support in the construction of the road.
“We purposely fixed the commissioning this time so that you would see the true colours for the delight of the people. We are standing at the centre, to the left, is named after my former DG, the late Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (rtd), the first indigenous governor of Akwa Ibom.
“To the right, it’s named after the former governor, Dr. Clement Isong. I thank our presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, ably represented by Governor Fintiri,” he said.
In his goodwill message, Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, commended the governor on his achievements.
“We are here to commission 9.5kms of 10 lanes, and if you multiply 9.5 by 10, you will have about 95kms road and you know what that means. My brother, Mr. Udom has done well, from aviation to infrastructure, capital human development, health, and virtually in everything.
[“I say congratulations to Udom Emmanuel. As you are winding down, may God Almighty strengthen you, may you provide a desired leadership to our campaign council for us to win convincingly and return PDP to Aso Rock, February 2023,” he stated.

On his part, former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, said he was in the state to be a part of the history, saying that the performance of Udom was a testimony to what the PDP governors can do.
“I feel so proud because I remember in February 2019, you invited me for another project, a project that many did not believe in, that was the commissioning of Ibom Airline. Today, it is a success.”
On his part, the Managing Director of Hensek Integrated Services, the engineering firm that constructed the road, Engr. Uwem Okoko, lauded Udom for his confidence and patronage of indigenous contractors in the state.
Okoko stressed that the governor’s action has helped to improve the contractors’ competence and empower them, while also creating employment for over three hundred youths.
Earlier, the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, while welcoming dignitaries, lauded the governor on his passion for development and his belief in the strength of Akwa Ibomites that have seen him give opportunity to the local contractors including Hensek Integrated Services to translate his vision in road infrastructure.
The road, which connects and links three major roads of Nwaniba, Oron and Aka in Uyo, the state capital is named after the former Military Administrator of Akwa Ibom State, late Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga and former Governor of Cross River State, late Dr. Clement Isong.
