A former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Saturday received a stream of political leaders, associates, and well-wishers at his Abuja residence following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who died on Friday in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness.

The condolence visits came amid public attention surrounding El-Rufai’s temporary release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, where he had been held since February 18 over allegations of financial misconduct.

He was granted release on compassionate grounds to enable him to attend his mother’s burial.

Among those who visited El-Rufai was a former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who commented in a video shared by the African Democratic Congress on the circumstances surrounding the release.

“To show you that the government knows what they’re doing, they just released him without a court order. El-Rufai’s charges are politically motivated,” Amaechi said.

Also at the residence was former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, who joined other dignitaries, friends, and family members in offering condolences.  Former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami SAN, and Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, also paid a visit, further reflecting the broad political presence at the gathering.
