‘Army-police joint operations on Shi’ites ongoing’

The Nigerian Army, Guards Brigade, has said it has ongoing joint operations with the police on the members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

It refused to disclose further details.

The spokesperson for the brigade, Captain Haruna Tagwai, stated this in a brief chat on Wednesday.

The Guards Brigade is the military command in charge of the FCT, some parts of Niger and Nasarawa states.

The Commander, Guards Brigade, Brig Gen Umar Musa, had on July 4 in Keffi, Nasarawa State, said the frequent activities of the Shiites were bringing discomfort to the FCT and must be adequately tackled.

In an interview on Wednesday, the brigade spokesman, Tagwai, said, “It is the work of the police and it is an encompassing work that is ongoing.”

When asked if the army was not involved, he said, “I never said so. Just that it is a joint operation.”

Meanwhile, the army has established 22 new Command Secondary Schools across the country in the last four years to meet the educational needs of its personnel.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai, stated this on Wednesday at the Army Headquarters Procurement Seminar for commandants, bursars and administrative officers of Command Secondary Schools in Abuja.

Buratai noted that the establishment of the schools was done with special interventions in the areas of construction and renovation of classrooms, provisions of Information and Communication Technology Centres.
