Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke issued a stern warning on Wednesday to individuals who might attempt to exploit the recent Appeal Court judgment to cause public unrest.
Proactively, has mandated all security agencies in the state to remain vigilant and apprehend anyone, regardless of social status, who engages in acts that threaten public peace. Such individuals will be brought to justice.
His warning was contained in a statement issued by hisspokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, and made available to journalists in Osogbo.
However, he assured all stakeholders of the state government’s non-interference in the forthcoming local government elections slated for February 22, 2025.
He promised that his administration would uphold the independence of the electoral commission in conducting credible elections.
While commending the peaceful campaigns by various political parties ahead of the elections, he urged candidates to focus on presenting their agenda to the electorate rather than resorting to violence or coercion.
“As a government, we are committed to free and fair elections. We have closely monitored the preparatory activities of the state electoral commission and assure the public that we respect its independence in conducting credible elections.
“We are highly educated in Osun State, and our literacy level is at an all-time high. This is not a state where residents can be deceived. They read and analyze court rulings and political issues critically. I urge our people to prepare for February 22. It is an opportunity to vote for your preferred council chairmen and councilors.
“We are a nation governed by law. The judiciary, as recently stated, is the last hope of the common man. We must avoid misrepresenting and misinforming the public about court proceedings. Spreading fake news is a punishable offense under the law.
“We have credible reports of plots by certain opposition elements to incite unrest in Osun State. I strongly warn those planning such acts to desist, as they will face serious consequences. As the Chief Security Officer of this state, I have directed security agencies to deal decisively with any instigator of violence, in line with the rule of law. We will not allow this state to be plunged into unnecessary conflict.
“Democracy is about ballots, not violence. On February 22, go to the polls and make your choice peacefully. Osun is a bastion of democracy, and we are fully prepared to defend our democratic heritage,” the governor stated.
