Admission into higher institutions of learning has been described as an opportunity which confers on students the chance to develop themselves towards achieving life’s goals and excelling in their chosen careers.
The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Prof Igbekele Amos Ajibefun, last week, said this during the 2018/2019 orientation programme for the fresh students of the University.
In his words, “By your admission into the University, you are being offered a golden opportunity to develop yourselves towards achieving great goals and excelling in your chosen careers,” the Vice Chancellor said.
At the event which held at the University’s Multi-Purpose Hall between Tuesday, March 12th and Thursday, March 14th, Ajibefun enthused over about AAUA’s capacity for producing world class scholars and professionals, urging the new students to take advantage of the enabling facilities in the University.
According to him, “The University has assembled the right programmes, Faculties, qualified personnel and suitable infrastructure. We boast of an assemblage of some of the best, brightest and well-trained academics in Nigerian universities. Our academic programmes are 100 per cent accredited and verified by the National Universities Commission, NUC.
“With this, you are guaranteed the embrace and mentorship of our proficient and amiable staff, as well as the convenience of our conducive facilities and natural and beautiful campus environment.”
The Vice Chancellor, however, warned the students against involvement in acts of examination malpractices and social vices as the University has zero tolerance for any form of misconduct.
“You will agree with me that building and sustaining a leading university give no room for condoning social vices. Hence, Adekunle Ajasin University has zero tolerance for acts that are capable of tarnishing the image it has built for itself over the years. I therefore urge you to shun social vices, including cultism, examination misconduct, robbery, stealing and rape, which are capable of jeopardizing the admission you have laboured hard to gain”, he warned.
The Vice Chancellor reeled out the various channels of seeking redress for any perceived infraction from staff or students. These, he said, range from Departmental to Faculty, the Student Affairs Unit, and finally to his office.
Speaking earlier, the Dean of the Student Affairs Unit, Dr. Olusegun Owolewa, restated the University’s intolerance for any kind of misconduct. He also said the Student Affairs Division, in conjunction with the Information Communication and Technology Application Centre (ICTAC) has automated and improved on most student-related operations.
He assured the students that the University will continue to ensure a conducive and safe environment for them both within and outside the campus.
Other highlights of the programme include talks and lectures on various topics that are of relevance to the training of the students. Among these were papers on: “AAUA Brand, Becoming Her Proud Ambassador” delivered by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Olugbenga Ige, and “Importance of Early Registration and Calculation of CGPA” addressed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor F. A Gbore.
Others include, “Students and Host Community, Positive Town and Gown Relationship” by the Registrar, Dr. M. S Ayeerun; “The Bursary and Financial Regulations as they affect the Students” addressed by the Bursar, Mrs. O. V. Ologun; and the University Librarian, Dr. Rotimi Egunjobi, who gave a lecture on “The University Library as a Central Faculty of Academic Development.”
