Again, armed hoodlums have attacked men of the Amotekun Corps in Osun State, leaving one of the operatives critically wounded.
The incident occured on Friday during a burial ceremony in Egbedore Local Government Area of the state during the burial of a deceased person on a plot of supposedly sacred ancestral land.
Irked by the burial, the town’s traditional ruler reportedly invited the Amotekun Corps to intervene.
When they arrived, the Amotekun operatives encountered a gang of armed hoodlums, who launched a violent assault, using harmful objects and weapons.
The operatives retreated and returned with reinforcements to manage the situation, but the assailants regrouped in larger numbers and resumed their attack, inflicting serious injuries on several Amotekun personnel.
Confirming the incident, Amotekun Public Relations Officer, Yusuf Wale Abass, condemned the unprovoked attack in a statement issued on Saturday.
He explained that the intervention was prompted by a formal request from the Oniwoye of Iwoye, who reported the unauthorized burial on ancestral land. Four operatives were deployed to investigate.
“Upon arrival, the operatives discovered the burial had already been completed. Suddenly, a notorious and long-wanted thug emerged with a gang of armed collaborators and launched a brutal attack on the officers, injuring them”.
The operatives withdrew to their command post in Awo to seek reinforcements. Shockingly, the hoodlums followed and attacked the Amotekun office in the presence of the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services (DSS) officers, as well as relatives of the assailants.
During the attack, the gang attempted to disarm the officers and caused serious injuries, prompting immediate medical treatment for the affected personnel.
“This violent act represents a direct threat to the peace and security of our communities and will not be tolerated. The Osun Amotekun Corps is working closely with relevant security agencies to ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved,” Bass stated.
He reaffirmed Amotekun’s commitment to safeguarding lives, property, and the peaceful coexistence of residents in Osun State.
