Adesina wins Obafemi Awolowo Leadership Prize

President of the African Development Bank (AFDB), Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, has emerged as the 4th recipient of the Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership.

The Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership, a prestigious biennial international award, follows a meticulous nomination and screening process by a selection committee made up of exceptional Nigerians.

The announcement was made, yesterday, during a media briefing on the unveiling of the recipient of the 2023 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership.

Chairman of the Selection Committee, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, said the accolade showered on Adesina not only acknowledges his achievements but also functions as a compelling encouragement for others to strive for excellence in leadership and good governance.

He stressed that as former Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Adeṣina implemented progressive changes, including reforms in the fertilizer sector, which effectively eradicated corruption, guaranteeing that farmers directly reaped the benefits of government-subsidised fertilisers.

Anyaoku mentioned that since taking on the role as President of the African Development Bank, Adeṣina worked to positively transform the continent, and demonstrated leadership by addressing various challenges, including spearheading and endorsing innovative initiatives to combat hunger and poverty.

Also, Executive Director, Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, Dr Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu the awards have been elevated to international standards, making it highly sought after.
