Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Ruth Elton, widely regarded as the oldest missionary to Nigeria.
In a statement by his spokesperson Mallam Olawale Rasheed on Sunday, he praised her life of selfless service, describing her as a symbol of faith, compassion, and dedication to humanity.
He noted that Ruth Elton, who arrived in Nigeria in 1973 alongside her father, Granville Elton, devoted her life to spreading the gospel and improving healthcare in underserved communities through grassroots initiatives.
Also, the governor highlighted the significance of Elton’s decision to renounce her British citizenship and fully embrace Nigerian nationality, describing it as a profound testament to her unwavering love for the country and its people.
Adeleke said, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Ruth Elton. At 91, she lived a full life, but her departure still leaves a void. Her tireless efforts in advancing faith and public health have left an indelible mark on our nation.
“Her commitment to Nigeria went beyond words — she became one of us, lived among us, and worked tirelessly for our wellbeing. Her passing is a great loss to Osun State, where she spent her final days, and to the nation at large. However, we find comfort in the lasting legacy she leaves behind.”
He prayed for the peaceful repose of Ruth Elton’s soul and encouraged the Christian community and all those touched by her work to carry forward her mission of service, compassion, and community upliftment.
