Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has approved the free enrollment of inmates across correctional centres in the state into the Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS).

Described as another milestone in the governor’s people-centered healthcare agenda, the initiative fulfills part of his campaign promise to ensure that no resident of Osun is left behind, regardless of social or financial status.

Announcing the development at a press briefing in Osogbo, the Executive Secretary of Osun Health Insurance Agency, said that the approval came after a passionate appeal by the Osun State Controller of Corrections, Olalekan Rotimi Oluwadele (MNIM), during a recent courtesy visit to the governor.

He said, “Since inmates are also residents of Osun who will eventually be reintegrated into society, their health remains a priority for Mr. Governor.

“This gesture is from a sincere heart, devoid of political sentiment, and reflects Osun State Government’s readiness to partner with federal and international bodies for the good of our people.”

Adeleke’s administration has in recent months rolled out comprehensive health interventions targeted at vulnerable groups.

These include:

  • Free OHIS enrollment for over 26,000 pensioners, with full access to treatment and exemption from the 10% drug cost;
  • Free health coverage for persons with disabilities, alongside the distribution of life-enhancing gadgets such as motorised wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids, visual aids, and UV-protection umbrellas; and
  • A statewide vision screening for over 450,000 pupils in public schools, which identified 46,000 cases of visual impairment. Of these, 43,000 received corrective glasses, while others requiring medication or surgery were treated at no cost.

The Executive Secretary urged inmates to reciprocate the governor’s gesture by adhering to correctional rules and preparing for reintegration into society with a healthy body and mind.

This initiative places Osun among the few Nigerian states actively integrating correctional inmates into state-sponsored health insurance — setting a benchmark for inclusive governance and universal health access.
