Osun university don seeks more space for women in politics

A lecturer at Osun State University, Dr. Margaret Faremi, has advocated more space for women in politics to enable them ontribute to societal development.

Faremi spoke on “Women Marginalization in Nigeria: The Way Forward,” at a public lecture organized by the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Osun State chapter.

She said political parties must create an enabling environment for women’s participation in active politics and they should sponsor more women to encourage them to be active participants in politics.

“The era of assembling women in political rallies in Asoebi and the customized T-shirts to hail and herald their male counterparts come rain, come shine is gone. Political parties should be able to sponsor women candidates within their parties for elective posts instead of making it the monopoly of their male counterparts.

“This is the common practice in advanced countries to encourage women in politics. Empowering women politically as men does not mean that women are aspiring to dominate men, it only implies that women will be accorded opportunities to develop their talents and to contribute meaningfully to societal development,” Faremi added.

The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, noted that the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke has tried in the appointment of women.

He said, “Women are always calm and thorough. We have to give them the opportunity.”
