Virginity and dowry are important issues in some cultural traditions. However, in modern society, people have different opinions on whether a woman’s virginity should remain a requirement for dowry.
WEEKEND HOPE speaks with some individuals on the issue.
Excerpts:

Ayodele Mayowa
Yes, it should. I believe virginity should remain a prerequisite for dowry because it is part of our culture and tradition. It also encourages young girls to maintain their dignity and respect their bodies before marriage.
Sunday Regina
No, because circumstances differ. Not every woman who is not a virgin has made that choice willingly. Some people have experienced sexual abuse or other difficult circumstances.
Therefore, virginity should not be used to judge a woman’s character or determine her bride price.
Olamilekan Oluwabusuyi
Yes, because of cultural values. In some African communities, virginity is seen as a sign of good upbringing and respect for tradition. I believe we should preserve our cultural values, although families should also consider the character of the person involved.
Oladimeji Aanuoluwapo
No, because it is unfair to women. I disagree with making virginity a prerequisite for dowry because it places unnecessary pressure on women. Men are rarely judged by the same standard, so I believe the expectation is unfair and discriminatory.
Obafemi Ebube
It depends on the couple. I believe it should depend on the agreement between the couple. If both partners value virginity, that is their choice. However, nobody should be forced to follow a tradition they do not believe in.
Popoola Omobolade
I don’t think virginity should be a prerequisite for dowry because a woman’s value goes beyond her sexual history. Marriage should be built on love, trust, understanding and mutual respect. If a man expects a virgin, he should also be ready to hold himself to the same standard.
Festus Sunday
Character matters more. I don’t think virginity should be a prerequisite for dowry. What matters most is the person’s honesty, respect, faithfulness, and readiness for marriage. These qualities are more important for a successful home than virginity.
Olajide Idowu
Tradition should be reviewed. I respect our culture, but I believe some traditions need to change with time. Virginity should not be compulsory for dowry because people should be allowed to make personal choices. Both partners should be judged by the same standards.
