The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11 Headquarters, Osogbo, AIG Bassey S. Ewah, has ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of anyone found destroying, defacing or unlawfully removing campaign materials belonging to political parties and their candidates in Osun and Oyo states.
Ewah declared zero tolerance for such acts, warning that the destruction of campaign posters, billboards and other political materials could trigger unnecessary tension, hostility and a breakdown of public peace.
The AIG gave the directive in a statement issued on November 5 by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ojedеле Olanrewaju Tunji, amid increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He described the destruction of campaign materials as provocative and unlawful, warning political parties, their supporters and other stakeholders against actions capable of heightening political tension.
The police chief also cautioned political actors against provocation, intimidation, vandalism and violence, urging them to demonstrate tolerance, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
He stressed the need for all stakeholders to respect the rights of others and conduct their political activities within the ambit of the law.
Ewah reassured residents of Osun and Oyo states of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining a peaceful environment for political activities.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of vandalism, political violence and other security threats to the nearest police station.
The directive comes as political parties and their supporters intensify activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the police emphasising the need to prevent political disagreements from escalating into violence.
