Workers in Ondo State are set for a dramatic change of fortune as Compressed Natural Gas buses and purpose-built low-cost hosing estates for them, to be provided by the state government are on the way going by the promise of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.
These are parts of the new measures being considered by the state government to ease transportation and accommodation challenges facing public servants, to enable them perform optimally in their respective duties.
Announcing the measures on Wednesday at the 2026 Public Service Week and Carnival, held at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade, in Akure, the governor, represented by his deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami, said the proposed interventions formed part of his administration’s broader commitment to workers’ welfare and public service reforms.
Besides, he said that his government would continuously examine other practical and sustainable approaches to reducing the burden on workers, noting that transportation challenges could affect punctuality, attendance and productivity.
In his words, “The proposal for affordable mass transportation, including the provision of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for workers, is therefore worthy of careful consideration as part of our broader workers’ welfare and public service reform agenda.
“We also recognise the challenges many public servants face in securing decent and affordable accommodation. Our existing housing loan scheme is one intervention, but we acknowledge that the broader housing deficit requires further attention.
“We will, therefore, continue to explore feasible approaches to expanding access to affordable housing, including the possibility of developing low-cost housing estates for public servants”.
Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and strengthening the capacity of the state’s public service, stressing that motivated and adequately supported workers were better positioned to deliver effective services to the people.
Also speaking at the occasion,, the State Head of Service, Chief Segun Odusanya, said the Public Service Carnival provided an avenue for bringing together public servants from different institutions and professional backgrounds “in an atmosphere of friendship, interaction and healthy engagement”
He highlighted the programmes of the current administration that have enabled workers in the state public service to be more efficient.
In their separate remarks, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ademola Olapade and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Comrade Clement Fatuase, asked for improved welfare for workers while acknowledging the state government’s efforts in different areas.
