A twin sister who worked as a medical doctor and pharmacist have died in Yobe State after separate battles with sickle cell disease.
The sisters, Dr Hadiya Usman and Dr Aidah Usman, died just two days apart, leaving their family, colleagues and friends devastated.
Hadiya was undergoing her medical internship at the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, while Aidah worked as a pharmacist at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital before their deaths.
The deceased were daughters of the Medical Director of FMC Nguru, Prof Hadiza Abdullahi Usman.
A family member, Ibrahim Auwal, confirmed the deaths on Monday, saying Hadiya died on Friday, while her twin sister passed away on Sunday.
“It is a very painful development. Hadiyah passed away on Friday, and Aidah followed on Sunday. Both sisters had been battling sickle cell disease, and their deaths are a great loss, particularly to their family, friends and colleagues,” Auwal said.
According to him, Hadiya had been admitted to FMC Nguru for about a week after suffering a sickle cell crisis before she died.
Aidah was reportedly receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital around the same period and was said to have recovered sufficiently to be discharged.
However, she later died on Sunday, according to the family member.
Auwal described the sisters as hardworking young professionals whose deaths had shocked their loved ones, adding that they had promising careers ahead of them.

“We are deeply saddened by what has happened. Losing the two sisters within just a few days has been extremely painful for the family. They were both dedicated to their professions and had promising futures ahead of them,” he said.
The sisters were subsequently buried according to Islamic rites.
