A commercial bus driver in Lagos narrowly escaped prosecution after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency discovered cocaine and methamphetamine allegedly concealed in a parcel he was transporting to Ondo State.

The NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this on Sunday in a post on his X account while warning commercial drivers and members of the public against accepting parcels without verifying their contents.

According to Babafemi, the driver had been given what appeared to be a bottle of Fearless energy drink in Lagos to deliver as a waybill package in Ondo State.

However, NDLEA operatives who examined the parcel discovered that the bottle had allegedly been used to conceal illicit drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine.

Babafemi said the driver was taken into custody and could have faced imprisonment because he was in possession of the parcel.

He explained that the driver was eventually spared after NDLEA operatives traced and arrested the individual who had handed the package to him.

Sharing a video of the incident, Babafemi said the case illustrated the risks faced by people who agree to transport parcels without knowing what they contain.

He warned that not everyone might be as fortunate as the driver, stressing that ignorance of a parcel’s contents may not shield a person from legal consequences.

The NDLEA spokesman urged commercial drivers, transport workers and members of the public to avoid accepting packages whose contents they cannot independently verify.

“Please avoid taking parcels you don’t know its content because possession makes you culpable, that’s the law,” Babafemi stated.

The agency has repeatedly warned members of the public against allowing their vehicles, luggage or delivery services to be used for transporting illicit drugs, whether knowingly or unknowingly.
