Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to protect peace, unity and justice as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, warning that the exercise will test the nation’s democratic maturity.
Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message on Thursday as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary. His remarks were also reported by other Nigerian outlets covering his statement.
The former President called on citizens to remain patriotic and place the nation’s interest above actions capable of threatening peace and national cohesion during the coming electoral season.
He said Nigeria had experienced several difficult periods since gaining independence but had continued to withstand its challenges through the resilience and determination of its people.
Jonathan said, “In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 66-year journey, the former President said the country had overcome numerous challenges and should continue to approach its future with hope and a sense of collective responsibility.
He urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to building a country capable of providing a better future for its citizens.
According to him, Nigeria’s diversity and abundant human and natural resources could provide a strong foundation for sustainable development if properly harnessed.
Jonathan particularly appealed to young Nigerians not to lose hope, urging them to remain courageous and committed to contributing to national development.
“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development,” he said.
He added, “To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come.”
The former President, however, said the responsibility for achieving such a future extended beyond ordinary citizens, stressing that leaders at all levels also had important roles to play.
Jonathan urged political and public office holders to demonstrate greater patriotism and address the country’s social and economic challenges through responsible leadership.
He said leaders must be prepared to make sacrifices, promote good governance and uphold accountability and the rule of law.
“To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” Jonathan said.
“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” he added.
Jonathan also called on Nigerians to demonstrate greater commitment to national service and work collectively towards building a peaceful, secure and equitable society.
“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he said.
