Two seven-year-old boys, Oloyede Ayo and Clinton Koleola, have died after they were reportedly electrocuted by a live electric wire that fell on a shop in Idanre, Ondo State.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 26, along Apefon Road in the town, throwing residents into confusion.
The boys were reportedly inside the shop when the live wire suddenly fell on the building.
An eyewitness said the children attempted to escape after the wire came down but were caught by the electrical current.
The impact reportedly left the two boys fatally electrocuted.
Residents were said to have been thrown into panic following the incident, as people gathered at the scene after the children were electrocuted.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Abayomi, said the command had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Abayomi said preliminary findings showed that a live electric wire had suddenly fallen on the shop while the children were attempting to make their way out.
He said the police were working to establish the circumstances that led to the wire falling and the subsequent electrocution of the children.
The police spokesman expressed sympathy with the families of the deceased, describing the incident as a painful loss.
He assured the families and residents that the command would investigate the matter thoroughly and establish what led to the fatal incident.
The deaths have further raised concerns over the danger posed by exposed or fallen electricity infrastructure in residential and commercial areas, particularly where members of the public may come into contact with live wires.
