A gas outlet around Liberty Junction in Kubwa, Abuja, was gutted by fire on Sunday morning, triggering panic among residents and road users in the area.
The Federal Fire Service, FCT Command, said the blaze was brought under control before it could escalate into a major gas explosion.
The incident occurred at about 6:30am when firefighters and other emergency responders arrived at the scene following reports of the fire.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the FCT Fire Service said its personnel responded swiftly and worked with other emergency agencies to contain the situation.
The command said the prompt intervention helped prevent what could have resulted in a major and destructive gas explosion.
A video released by the fire service showed firefighters battling the flames at the facility as thick smoke billowed from the affected building.
Images from the scene also showed significant fire damage to the gas outlet, while some vehicles and motorcycles around the facility appeared to have been affected by the blaze.
The fire service did not disclose the cause of the incident as of the time of filing this report.
It was also unclear whether anyone was injured or whether the fire resulted in any fatalities.
The command did not immediately give details of the extent of property damage caused by the fire, as assessment of the incident was ongoing.
