Two residents have been killed after suspected bandits attacked Dukura community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where the assailants also reportedly rustled livestock and stole motorcycles.
The attackers reportedly struck on Monday morning, blocking the road linking the affected communities to Tambuwal market and preventing residents from moving freely.
Sources said the bandits made away with cows, camels, sheep and motorcycles belonging to some commercial motorcycle operators before security operatives arrived at the scene.
The attack reportedly triggered panic in Dukura, Dalijan and other communities in Girkau Ward, including Zugu, Indire, Mazoji, Tungar Kabawa, Runtuwa, Jabga and Sabon Garin Zugu.
Confirming the incident, the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the command received information about the attack and immediately deployed personnel to the area.
Rufai said the operatives engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat.
He, however, disclosed that the assailants had killed two people before the arrival of the police.
“Immediately we got the information, our men moved to the area and engaged the bandits in gunshots, forcing them to retreat.
“Unfortunately, before the arrival of the police, the bandits had already killed two people and made away with some animals,” he said.
The police spokesman said efforts were ongoing to establish further details about the incident while security measures were being strengthened in the affected communities.
The latest attack comes amid renewed security concerns in parts of Sokoto State.

Recently, no fewer than 10 people were reportedly killed and several others injured when suspected bandits attacked Tofa community in Rabah Local Government Area of the state.
Local sources also said between 38 and 40 residents were abducted during the attack.
