The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, has congratulated the government and people of the state on the 35th anniversary of its creation, urging all stakeholders to use the milestone to renew their commitment to sustainable and inclusive development.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, and Secretary, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju, the union described the anniversary as an important moment for reflection on the journey of the state, its achievements, challenges and prospects for the future.
Osun State was created on August 27, 1991, out of the old Oyo State.
The NUJ noted that in the 35 years since its creation, Osun had established itself as an important component of Nigeria’s political, economic, cultural and social development, citing the state’s rich human capital, cultural heritage, agricultural potential and the resilience of its people.
According to the union, the anniversary should not only be a period of celebration but also an opportunity for the people and government to assess the progress made so far and identify areas requiring greater attention.
The NUJ paid tribute to successive administrations, traditional rulers and institutions, public servants, organised labour, civil society organisations, business owners, professionals and ordinary residents for their contributions to the growth and development of the state.
The journalists’ body also acknowledged the significant role played by the media in documenting Osun’s history and holding public institutions accountable.
It said journalists had consistently served as the eyes and ears of the public by reporting government policies and activities, exposing shortcomings, highlighting achievements and providing platforms for citizens to express their concerns and aspirations.
The union also remembered journalists who had contributed to the development of journalism and the state but were no longer alive, describing their dedication and sacrifices as an enduring part of Osun’s heritage.
The NUJ therefore called for a stronger and more constructive partnership between government and the media, stressing that journalists remained important pillars of democracy and should be allowed to perform their constitutional responsibilities without unnecessary hindrance.
The union equally urged the people of Osun to take greater interest in governance by participating actively in democratic processes and contributing meaningfully to the development of their communities.
It called on citizens to protect public property, reject violence and misinformation, and promote peace, unity and responsible citizenship.
The NUJ said the next 35 years should be focused on transforming Osun’s enormous potential into tangible prosperity, moving from promises to measurable results and from political competition to sustainable development
It urged political leaders and other stakeholders to prioritise policies and programmes capable of improving the living conditions of residents, creating economic opportunities and ensuring inclusive development across the state.
The union wished the government and people of Osun greater peace, prosperity, unity and development, expressing hope that the new chapter in the state’s history would bring an improved quality of life for all residents.
