The eagle that failed to fly

Reflection for the day

By Olubunmi Adebayo

*The Eagle is the king of birds.*

*The Lion is the king of animals. Just as Gold is the king of metals, and Diamond is the king of stones.*

*When God selected Saul as the first king of Israel, he was not just chosen to be king, he was chosen to lead the army of Israel to war.*

*The people of Israel themselves made this request, and God took his time to look for a man that will fit the desire of the people.*

*Please read the request profile of the people before prophet Samuel :*

*1 Samuel 8:[1] And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.*
*[4]Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,*
*[5]And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.*
*[19]Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;*
*_[20]That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles_.*

*A king who could lead the army of Israel to battle was a critical point in the request of the elders of Israel.*

*And in fulfilling this, God chose for them Saul, the son of Kish.*

*Please read the physical qualities of Saul :*

*1 Samuel 9:[1]Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.*
*[2]And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.*

*The father of Saul was described as a man of power in verse one above.*

*But the most important distinguishing quality of Saul was that :*

*_The tallest man in the whole of Israel stood just at the shoulder level of Saul -please verse 2 above._*

*The implication of the height of Saul was that he was a GIANT.*

*Saul was not just tall, but rather, he was taller than the tallest man in Israel from shoulder upward :*

*1 Samuel 9:[2]: “from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people”.*

*Just imagine the tallest man in your own community standing at just the shoulder of Saul (but we are talking of the tallest man in a whole nation standing at the shoulder of king Saul.*

*The irony of this was that when occasion called for Saul to stand up and justify his tall height against the giant champion of the Philistines by the name – Goliath – the arch enemies of Israel, the eagle of Saul failed to fly.*

*The battle he failed to fight, was what David stood up to by putting his life on the line against Goliath.*

*God has his purpose for every man – when it was time for Saul to justify his own, he became a letdown.*

*For 40 days, he couldn’t stand up against Goliath, he was expecting another man to fight his war – of course, David came, saw the giant, heard his boast, and stood up to remove the shame of the challenge from Israel.*

*In fact, the soldiers of Israel and King Saul told David that he couldn’t fight against Goliath.*

*But he told them that the battle is of the Lord’s.*

*The emergence of David in fighting the battle Saul was supposed to fight is a confirmation that :*

*1 Cor 1:[27] “God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty”.*

*I pray for someone reading this :*

*Your eagle will fly. On the day of your glory, you will not disappoint God. And every Goliath before you, God will bring them down.*

*Tomorrow God willing, we shall look at why the eagle of King Saul couldn’t fly when it should most have.*

Top of the day to you 👍
