The Catholic Bishop of Oyo Diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo, has expressed profound joy and gratitude to God following the release of the 45 teachers and pupils abducted in Oyo State nearly two months ago.

In a statement issued shortly after the victims regained their freedom, Bishop Badejo described the development as “sweet, sweet relief,” saying he was overjoyed by their safe return after spending about 57 days in captivity.

The cleric gave thanks to God for preserving the lives of the victims and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, security agencies, and all operatives involved in securing their release.

He also appreciated the media, religious bodies, civil society groups, and well-meaning Nigerians who prayed, fasted, and continued to mount pressure for the safe return of the abductees.

Bishop Badejo congratulated the families reunited with their loved ones after weeks of anxiety and uncertainty, while extending his condolences to families who lost relatives during the tragic incident.

Describing the abduction as a painful reminder of Nigeria’s security challenges, the Bishop said the incident should serve as a wake-up call for governments at all levels and citizens to strengthen collaboration in protecting lives and property.

He prayed for an end to kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country, urging Nigerians to continue seeking God’s guidance while supporting efforts aimed at improving national security.

The Bishop further appealed for comprehensive rehabilitation programmes for the freed teachers and pupils, noting that the traumatic experiences they endured during their 57-day captivity would have lasting psychological and emotional effects.

According to him, the victims deserve adequate medical attention, psychological counselling, and pastoral care to aid their healing, recovery, and successful reintegration into their families and communities.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to give thanks to God for the safe release of the victims while praying for divine wisdom, protection, and strength for the nation’s leaders, security personnel, and citizens.
