Yorubaland has lost a cultural giant — Ooni mourns Kola Oyewo

The Ooni of Ife, His Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, has paid glowing tribute to veteran Nollywood actor, theatre scholar and cultural icon, , describing him as a pride of Yorubaland whose immense contributions to culture, education and the performing arts will remain evergreen.

Pa Oyewo passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 80, drawing tributes from across the country, particularly from the arts and cultural community.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Otunba Moses Olafare, the monarch expressed deep sadness over the demise of the veteran actor and extended condolences to his family, friends, associates and admirers.

The Ooni, who is the Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC) and Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), described the late thespian’s passing as the end of a remarkable era in Nigerian theatre and cultural scholarship.

According to the revered monarch, Pa Oyewo devoted his entire life to the promotion of Yoruba language, culture and values through his exceptional performances on stage and screen, as well as his contributions to academia.

Born on March 27, 1946, in , the late actor rose to become one of Nigeria’s most respected theatre practitioners. Though a native of Oba-Ile, he spent a significant part of his life in , where he became a highly respected figure and contributed immensely to the cultural and intellectual development of the ancient town.

The Ooni described him as a custodian of Yoruba heritage whose works helped preserve indigenous traditions while inspiring generations of actors, scholars and culture enthusiasts across Nigeria and beyond.

“Pa Kola Oyewo was a pride of Yorubaland, a distinguished scholar and a cultural ambassador who dedicated his life to the promotion of our rich heritage. Through his talent, wisdom and commitment to excellence, he brought honour not only to Ile-Ife and Osun State but to the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria as a whole,” the monarch stated.

The royal father further noted that the deceased’s influence extended beyond entertainment, touching the areas of education, mentorship and cultural preservation.

He added that Pa Oyewo’s enduring legacy would continue to inspire future generations and serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving indigenous culture and values.

While praying for the peaceful repose of the departed cultural icon, the Ooni urged members of the Oyewo family to take solace in the impactful life and outstanding achievements of their patriarch.

The death of Pa Kola Oyewo has continued to attract tributes from prominent Nigerians, with many describing him as one of the finest ambassadors of Yoruba culture and a towering figure in Nigeria’s theatre and film industry.
