Osun State Government has alerted residents of the state of risk of heavy rainfall, flash flooding, windstorms, and other extreme weather conditions expected during the ongoing rainy season.
It said recent meteorological forecasts and environmental observations indicate that several communities in the state may witness intense rainfall capable of causing severe flooding, destruction of property, erosion, traffic disruption, collapse of weak structures, and possible threats to human lives if urgent preventive measures are not taken.
According to the government, residents living in flood-prone areas, riverbank communities, low-lying environments, and locations with poor drainage systems are particularly vulnerable and must exercise maximum caution during periods of heavy rainfall.
In a statement issued from Osogbo, the government directed residents to immediately clear blocked drainage channels and waterways around homes, offices, markets, and business premises in order to ensure free flow of rainwater and reduce the risk of flooding.
Residents were also warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains, canals, and water passages, stressing that such practices contribute significantly to environmental disasters and flooding across communities.
The advisory further urged residents to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy downpours and to stay away from flooded roads, bridges, and fast-moving water to prevent accidents and possible loss of lives.
The government also advised residents to secure rooftops, electric poles, trees, signboards, and weak structures against strong winds and rainstorms that may accompany the extreme weather conditions.
Parents and guardians were urged to closely monitor children during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, while transport operators, traders, school authorities, and community leaders were encouraged to prioritize safety and ensure full compliance with all emergency and environmental advisories.
The statement noted that relevant government agencies and emergency response teams across Osun State have already been placed on high alert and directed to intensify monitoring and rapid response efforts in vulnerable areas.
However, the government emphasized that prevention and personal responsibility remain critical in reducing avoidable disasters, urging residents to cooperate with authorities in safeguarding lives and property.
“The government will not tolerate activities that worsen environmental hazards, including indiscriminate waste disposal and blockage of drainage systems,” the statement warned.
Residents were therefore advised to treat the warning with utmost seriousness and promptly report incidents of flooding, erosion threats, fallen trees, and drainage blockages to the appropriate authorities.
The statement was signed by Professor Chinwe Obuaku, Director-General and Special Envoy to the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy.
