Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the immediate revitalisation of the Safe School Initiative in the state following recent incidents of school kidnappings reported in neighbouring Oyo State.

The directive, according to a statement issued on Sunday, aimed at preventing any possible spillover of the security threat into Osun communities and schools.

The governor ordered the Ministry of Education and other relevant government and security agencies to immediately activate measures to strengthen security around schools across the state, particularly those located in border communities and remote areas.

A statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, said that as part of the renewed security efforts, Adeleke also directed intensified intelligence gathering around schools while instructing the Amotekun Corps to strengthen collaboration with non-governmental peace and security organisations currently supporting security operations in schools across the state.

Adeleke assured parents, guardians and school authorities of the safety of students and staff, stressing that his administration remains committed to protecting pupils within the state’s education system.

The governor further directed his Special Adviser on Security Matters to work closely with heads of security agencies in implementing the new security framework.

“We are resolved to secure our pupils across our school system. Necessary steps are ongoing to improve security of schools especially in rural areas. The existing safe school plan will be strengthened,” the governor stated.

He added that the Commissioner for Education and the Security Adviser had been mandated to meet and finalise the revitalisation plan aimed at improving safety measures in schools statewide.
