Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, is wooing private investors io the state’s coastal tourism sector,
Particularly, hee declared that his administration is targeting between five and ten investors to transform the Araromi coastline into a vibrant leisure destination.
He disclosed this on Monday during the Araromi seaside carnival in Ilaje Local Government Area, stressing the importance of strategic partnerships to harness the area’s vast economic potential.
The governor noted that although the coastline, stretching about 72 kilometres remains one of the longest in Africa, it has yet to attract the level of investment required to maximise its benefits.
He said the state government had begun deliberate steps to change the narrative by showcasing the coastal asset to a global audience.
According to him, the initiative was designed to draw attention to the beach and stimulate investor interest, a move already yielding positive responses.
He disclosed that private participation had commenced, citing the intervention of a private operator, who has introduced basic facilities such as shelters and a mobile kitchen to improve visitors’ experience.
The Governor described this as a sign of growing confidence in the area, noting that such contributions were gradually enhancing the beach’s attractiveness.
Addressing residents and visitors, the Governor reflected on the universal appeal of beach resorts, stressing that vacations are often incomplete without the serene backdrop of the ocean.
He traced the historical importance of waterways, recalling his own journey from Obenla to Lagos in 1976 via water, and noting the role of oceans in trade and exploration, including during the transatlantic slave trade.
“The ocean has always been part of our civilisation. It is one of God’s wonders. From Araromi, you can connect with the world. That is why people gather by the seaside to relax, enjoy nature and breathe fresh, uncontaminated air,” he said.
Governor Aiyedatiwa encouraged attendees to embrace relaxation as a means to renew strength and clear the mind, emphasising the health and recreational benefits of the ocean.
He disclosed that the state has already measured the land and finalised designs for a new beach resort, which he assured will be operational by next year.
“We are intentional about this. The state government will lead, but we welcome investors to partner with us. Land is available for anyone ready to develop the beach into a convenient and relaxing resort,” he said.
Addressing concerns over safety, Governor Aiyedatiwa guaranteed that the Ilaje local government area and the beach resort will be among the safest locations in Nigeria.
“There is no kidnapping, no banditry. Maximum security will be ensured. The Atlantic Ocean flanks the area and the only access road will be properly manned. Our people know how to handle any threat,” he assured.
He added that the state government would take the lead in establishing a standard beach resort, which would be designed, built and operated by the government. Construction is expected to commence this year and be completed within a year, catering to tourists from across the country seeking alternative destinations.
The governor further stressed that ongoing and planned infrastructure projects, including road upgrades and the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, would play a crucial role in supporting investment and improving access to the coastline.
He explained that the proximity of the highway to the beach corridor, with an estimated five-minute drive, would significantly boost visitor turnout and economic activities.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Adesoji Afolabi, said the Easter carnival formed part of efforts to revive the state’s tourism sector, noting that the event was in its second edition.
He explained that the initiative was designed to attract international tourists and position Araromi beach as a global destination, adding that the government planned to develop modern facilities such as chalets, reception halls and other infrastructure to enhance its appeal.
Afolabi emphasised the need for private sector participation, noting that tourism development required significant resources.
He called on individuals and corporate organisations to partner with the state government in transforming the beach into a world-class resort, highlighting its proximity to Lagos as a strategic advantage.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, commended the governor’s creativity and vision, describing the initiative as a step towards showcasing the state’s natural endowments.
He noted that residents previously had to travel to Lagos to enjoy beach experiences but can now access similar opportunities within an hour at Araromi seaside, which he described as having one of the longest and most attractive coastlines in the country.
Chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government Area, Ebimobowei Caleb Molos, described the initiative as commendable, noting that tourism development would significantly improve livelihoods and attract industrial growth.
He disclosed that expatriates were expected to visit the area within a few months to commence inspection and development processes, adding that the project would benefit not only the local government but the entire state.
Molos highlighted the area’s sea resources as supportive of industrial activities, stressing that tourism development would attract investors and broader economic growth.
Similarly, Hon. Maurice Oripenaye, Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, expressed excitement over what he described as an unprecedented development in the area, noting that such exposure had never been witnessed before.
He said the development had revealed the tourism potential of the coastline, which stretches over 24 kilometres, adding that it compares favourably with beaches in Lagos and other West African countries.
Chairman of ODIRS, Bayo Rojugbokan, said it was a great time for the state, noting that the project would generate more revenue and urging investors to act quickly, as development of the largest coastline would be rapid and competitive.
Commissioner for Water Resources and Public Hygiene, Ayodele Akande, lauded the governor for investing in Araromi beach, noting that it would spur development and revenue for the state.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Dr Jibayo Adeyeye recalled visiting the beach in 2015 and observed that until Governor Aiyedatiwa’s attention, nothing tangible had been done in the area.
He encouraged investors to engage, noting that investments in Araromi beach would yield returns fivefold.
The event was attended by cabinet members, House of Assembly members, private investors and tourists from across the country.
