Residents of Ikire in Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State turned out in large numbers on Saturday as Governor Ademola Adeleke officially presented the staff of office to the new Akire of Ikireland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Olanrewaju Tajudeen Akinola, Akintula I.
The colourful ceremony, marked by pomp, cultural displays, and widespread jubilation, signaled what many described as the beginning of a new era of peace and unity in the ancient town after years of chieftaincy disputes.
From the main expressway to the royal palace, enthusiastic residents lined the streets, cheering and chanting “Imole” as the governor made a slow, triumphant procession into the town—a place he fondly described as part of his upbringing.
Speaking at the event, Governor Adeleke emphasized his administration’s commitment to upholding due process, the rule of law, and respect for traditional institutions across the state.
“I have done the right thing for the people of Ikire,” the governor declared, noting that the emergence of the new monarch strictly followed the legally recognized process.
He explained that the appointment of Oba Akinola was guided by the Terms of Settlement reached and affirmed by the Court of Appeal in 2025, which resolved longstanding disputes over the Akire stool.
Providing historical context, Adeleke recalled that the stool had been embroiled in crisis dating back to 2021, rooted in earlier legal battles, including a 2014 Supreme Court judgment that nullified the claim of the Lambeloye Ruling House.
He noted that a resolution was eventually achieved during the administration of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, in collaboration with all five ruling houses in Ikire, leading to an amendment of the 1958 Akire Chieftaincy Declaration.
The amendment paved the way for the Aketula Ruling House to produce the next Akire, a decision later upheld by the appellate court, which specifically affirmed that Prince Olanrewaju Tajudeen Akinola should ascend the throne when the vacancy occurred.
Describing the new monarch as “a son of destiny,” Adeleke urged Oba Akinola to prioritize unity, peace, and development in his reign.
“Kabiyesi, see yourself as the father of all—both at home and in the diaspora. Unite your people and work tirelessly for the growth and progress of Ikire, Irewole Local Government, Osun State, and Nigeria at large,” he said.
The governor also called for collaboration between the traditional institution and his administration, encouraging the monarch to mobilize his people for sustained development efforts.
Reaffirming his personal connection to the town, Adeleke described himself as “a son of Ikire by adoption,” recalling his early years spent in the community and seeking continued support from residents.
He further used the occasion to urge the people to sustain their backing for his administration and its policies, particularly ahead of future political engagements.
The event drew commendations from key political figures and stakeholders, including former Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi, who praised Adeleke for ensuring continuity in governance.
Alabi expressed satisfaction that the current administration respected and implemented the settlement framework initiated under his former principal, Oyetola, describing the move as a demonstration of responsible leadership.
Also speaking, Senator Lere Oyewumi lauded the governor for restoring peace to Ikire, stating that the people would not forget what he described as Adeleke’s “positive and courageous action.”
He offered prayers for the continued progress of the town and commended the administration for deepening stability in the community.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including traditional rulers such as the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Oba Adesuyi Haastrup, alongside other royal fathers and political leaders from across the state.
In his acceptance speech, the new Akire, Oba Olanrewaju Tajudeen Akinola, expressed gratitude to the state government and the people of Ikire for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to uphold peace, promote unity, and work collaboratively with stakeholders to advance the development of Ikireland.
The coronation is widely seen as a significant step toward consolidating peace after years of legal and communal disputes over the traditional stool.
Observers note that the successful resolution and installation process underscore the importance of adherence to due process and stakeholder engagement in managing sensitive traditional matters.
As celebrations continued across Ikire, residents expressed optimism that the new monarch’s reign would usher in sustained peace, unity, and socio-economic development in the historic town.
