Passengers who travelled from Lagos and neighbouring states to Osun State for the 2026 Eid al-Fitr celebration have returned home in high spirits, praising Governor Ademola Adeleke for what they described as a timely and compassionate intervention.
.
The return journey on Sunday marked the successful completion of the “Imole Free Train Ride,” a flagship initiative of the Adeleke administration designed to cushion the economic burden on citizens during festive periods.
Thousands of beneficiaries, who had earlier boarded the free train from Lagos, Abeokuta, and Ibadan, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate the holiday with their loved ones without the usual financial strain.
Many passengers described the governor as a “God-sent leader,” noting that the initiative reflects a government that understands the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
According to them, the free train service not only provided safe and comfortable transportation but also restored hope in governance that prioritizes the welfare of the people.
“I have not seen this kind of gesture in a long time,” one of the returnees said. “To travel from Lagos to Osun and back without paying a dime, especially in this economy, is something we will never forget. Governor Adeleke has shown that leadership is about service.”
The passengers had earlier arrived in Osogbo, the state capital, on Thursday evening, with the final batch disembarking at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park to a warm reception from government officials.
Speaking at the reception, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Rev. Dr. Bunmi Jenyo, commended the governor for the initiative, describing it as a clear demonstration of responsive governance.
He urged the visitors to take advantage of their stay to witness ongoing developmental projects across the state and to support the administration’s continuity in the forthcoming election.
After days of celebration with family and friends, the train departed Osogbo at exactly 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, conveying passengers back to their respective destinations.
Beyond easing transportation challenges, the Imole Free Train initiative has been widely lauded as a strategic effort to reconnect citizens in the diaspora with their roots while promoting social cohesion during major festivities.
The Osun State Government has also announced that the initiative will continue during the Easter celebrations. The next phase of the free train service is scheduled to depart from Iddo Terminus in Lagos on April 3, 2026, with stopovers in Abeokuta and Ibadan before arriving in Osun.
For many beneficiaries, the programme is more than just a free ride it is a symbol of inclusive governance and a reminder that, even in challenging times, government intervention can make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people.
