Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has called on members of the House of Representatives to intensify oversight and ensure strict enforcement of laws passed by the National Assembly in order to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.
He made the call while receiving members of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts during a courtesy visit to his office at the State Secretariat Complex in Abere, Osogbo.
The governor stressed that effective democracy requires more than the passage of laws, noting that strong oversight and strict compliance are essential to ensure that democratic institutions function properly.
According to him, lawmakers have a critical role to play in protecting the country’s democratic system and ensuring that electoral laws are fully implemented.
“Legislators must go beyond passing laws to ensuring compliance through proper oversight and due process,” Adeleke said, adding that Nigerians expect their representatives to defend democratic values and uphold the rule of law.
He emphasised that credible elections remain the foundation of democratic governance, warning that any attempt to undermine the electoral process would amount to a betrayal of the sacrifices made by heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
The governor also spoke on the forthcoming August 15 governorship election in Osun State, describing it as a significant milestone that will attract national and international attention ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adeleke noted that the election provides an opportunity for stakeholders to demonstrate commitment to a free, fair and transparent electoral process that truly reflects the will of the electorate.
Expressing confidence in the performance of his administration since assuming office in 2022, the governor said he would seek the mandate of the people again, stressing that respecting voters’ choices remains the most effective way to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Earlier, the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, Hon. Jeremiah Umar, commended the Osun State Government for the warm reception accorded to members of the committee.
Umar explained that the committee was in the state for a five-day training and oversight programme, urging the governor to sustain policies and initiatives that have positively impacted residents of the state.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Bamidele Salam, praised the Adeleke administration for its achievements in infrastructure development, particularly in the education and health sectors.
He also commended the government’s efforts in implementing economic reforms, settling part of the salary arrears owed by the previous administration and providing welfare packages for workers in the state.
Among those present at the meeting were the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Teslim Igbalaye, the Head of Service, Mr Ayanleye Aina, and other members of the state executive council.
