You and your parents

Reflection for the day

By Olubunmi Adebayo

*On the list of the Ten Commandments from God, the first four Laws are to regulate human relationship with God.*

*While the remaining six Commandments are to regulate our relationship with our fellow men.*

*The very first one on the list of the six Laws, points human beings back to our parents :*

*Exodus 20: [12] “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee”.*

*This Law is one great Commandment from God.*

*In fact, it is called the Commandment with PROMISE :*

*Ephesians 6: [2] “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)*”
*”[3]That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.*”

*One of the ways to be well with a man is by honouring his parents.*

*But the truth is, honouring parents is a tradition that is fast disappearing from our modern day generation.*

*Several young ones are too quick to forget their parents in the face of their daily pendulum of activities.*

*Truth be told, those who honour their parents are simply sowing a worthy seed into their own future.*

*Our young ones must always be reminded that :*
*They could be gifted.*
*They could be brilliant.*
*They could be knowledgeable.*
*Indeed they could be destined for something great in life.*

*But one sure thing that will facilitate the actualisation of the promises of God in their lives is the respect and honour they give to their parents.*

*Our young ones should remember that those who make it a duty to honour parents and elders, will end up living to become parents and elders themselves.*

*They must learn to defer to their parents.*

*They must practice the habit of greeting them properly.*

*Most young people hardly show due courtesies to their parents and elders anymore.*

*Yet, the reason why some young ones don’t go far today is because of this character default.*

*Appreciate your parents. Love them. Buy appreciative gifts for them.*

*Pay attention to their health as they age.*

*They have laboured on you, reciprocate by taking care of them, so that your own children will take care of you.*

*You must run away from disparaging, dishonoring and disrespecting your parents.*

*Always remember, there are blessings attached to honouring one’s parents.*

Top of the day to you
