Amotekun debunks alleged extortion in Osun

Osun State

Amotekun Corps has debunked a viral social media allegation accusing its operatives of colluding with the Osun State Transport Management Agency (OTRAN) to extort a motorcyclist in Ikirun, Ifelodun Local Government Area.

It dscribed the allegation as false, politically motivated, and misleading.

In a statement, the Corps’ Public Relations Officer, Mr. Yusuf Idowu Abass, said the narrative is part of a calculated attempt to smear the image of the security outfit.

He said, “Our attention was drawn to a viral post alleging that operatives of the Amotekun Corps in Ifelodun Command were involved in extorting money from a motorcyclist in collaboration with OTRAN officials. After a thorough internal investigation, we can state categorically that this claim is completely untrue”.

Abass clarified that the incident in question involved only OTRAN officials, adding that the motorcycle was being operated by an individual who was unable to provide ownership documents.

“The motorcycle was taken to the OTRAN office, which is located adjacent to our command office in Ikirun—not inside the Amotekun facility, as claimed. The legal owner later retrieved the motorcycle after paying a stipulated fine to OTRAN. Amotekun operatives were never involved in the arrest, questioning, detention, or any financial transaction,” he stated.

He emphasized that while Amotekun sometimes shares premises with other government agencies, the Corps operates independently and remains committed to its core mandate of protecting lives and property.

Also, he linked the allegation to ongoing efforts by certain politically motivated actors to discredit the Amotekun initiative, saying:
“This false narrative fits a recent pattern of coordinated attacks aimed at undermining public trust in our operations. The Corps raised concerns last week about such targeted smear campaigns.”

Reassuring residents of the Corps’ professionalism and neutrality, Abass reiterated Amotekun’s apolitical stance and urged the public to disregard misinformation.

“We remain steadfast in our duty to serve and protect the people of Osun State with honour and integrity. However, we will not hesitate to pursue legal action against those who continue to spread malicious falsehoods.”
