70 OAU students arrested for alleged internet fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC on Wednesday arrested over 70 students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile Ife for allegedly being internet fraudsters.

The officials reportedly arrived the institution at about 9am and raided the campus where they apprehended the suspects and whisked them away in their vehicles.

A source who confirmed the development said that the arrest has generated wild condemnation by the students union and students of the institution.

According to the agency: “They were arrested on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Oduduwa Estate area of Ile-Ife, Osun State following actionable intelligence on their suspected involvement in fraudulent internet-related activities.

“A credible intelligence linked Oduduwa Estate with activities of suspected internet fraudsters.

“Items recovered include exotic cars, 190 mobile phones and 40 laptops among others.”

The suspects according to information have made useful statements to the EFCC and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
