22 abducted Niger victims rescued

Twenty-two victims abducted during the invasion of Kuchi community in Munya local government area of Niger State by terrorists have been rescued by the security taskforce.

It was learnt the terrorists were hindered from taking their victims further when they got to the Dangunu River, which was overflowing because of heavy rainfall.

On sighting the security forces after, the terrorists abandoned their victims and ran into the bush and river.

Niger Commissioner of Internal Security and Humanitarian Affairs, Emmanuel Umar, who confirmed the rescue said security forces and the terrorists engaged in a fierce gunfight which led to the neutralisation of some of the terrorists while one of the victims sustained gunshot wounds.

“During the encounter, the terrorists scampered into the overflowed river and forest belt, abandoning their victims. Some of their items and equipment were recovered,” he said.

The Commissioner said the victims have been debriefed and reunited with their families.

He appealed to the people, and health service providers within Munya and Shiroro communities to be vigilant and immediately report any strange or suspicious person loitering in the communities in a manner fatigued and or with gunshot wounds to relevant authorities

Umar then appreciated the continued efforts of the heads of security agencies in the state and the community leaders towards mitigating the spate of insecurity in some parts of the state.
