15 dead, 11 injured in Brazil buildings collapse

Africa and the rest of the world

The death toll has risen to 15 following the collapse of two buildings in a part of Rio de Janeiro controlled by criminal gangs last week, broadcaster Globo reported on Tuesday.

Rescuers found the latest four bodies overnight and on Tuesday morning, according to media reports.

The residential buildings, which had been constructed without the necessary permits, collapsed following heavy rains on Friday.

Rescuers working with dogs and helicopters have been searching for more possible victims, with about 10 people still missing.

Eleven people were reported to have been injured.

According to the city administration, the two five-storey buildings in the Muzema district were illegally constructed.

Prosecutors said the area is controlled by criminal gangs involved in drug trafficking, extortion of protection money, contract killings and organising votes for local politicians.

The gang members also deal in real estate, and in the Muzema district, crime syndicates have recently entered the real estate business on a large scale, often paying little heed to building regulations.
