Ten passengers of a commercial vehicle were Saturday kidnapped along the Uturu-Akara Road in Isuikwuato Local Government Area (LGA) of Abia State.

It was gathered that the passengers boarded the vehicle at a motor park opposite the Abia State University Uturu.

They were on their way to Akara in Isuikwuato LGA when the vehicle was attacked.

The situation caused panic among other commuters who worried that the presence of the police, army, and vigilance operatives on the road may not be enough to secure them.

Chairman of Isuikwuato LGA Chima Agbaeze confirmed the incident, describing it as regrettable.

He lamented that despite the many security checkpoints on the road and the council’s best efforts, these had not stopped hoodlums from terrorizing motorists and bandits from abducting travellers.

The LG boss assured that efforts were ongoing to determine the victims’ identities and to rescue them.

An Isuikwuato politician and former Abia State Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Emma Nwaka lamented, among others, that the attacks may scare away indigenes of Isuikwuato from returning home for the yuletide.

Abia State Command of the Nigeria Police through the Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna, was yet to respond to enquiries on the matter.
